I'd heard mixed reviews about this place but thought I world try it out. It was my nephews 18th birthday so we headed here for a change.
It was a Thursday night so the place was relatively quiet with only a few other tables in. The place as you may have guessed from the name is an old train station waiting room. The platform outside is still used by people waiting for the train. They have refurbished the place wonderfully. All the stone work is stripped back to its natural state. The place feels big and airy in a good way.
They serve great cocktails but unfortunately I was driving. We ordered our dinner. The staff were lovely, helpful and friendly even offering my mum a wee tour of the place as she grew up in Tain and remembered it as the waiting room.
Our food arrived and although it was more expensive than other local places the portion size and taste was worth it. I had the chicken pate to start and then the salmon which was huge. With that you also got a side of vegetables and potatoes. I would like to go back without the car and sample some cocktails. -

Food and service was excellent. I had Shepard's pie with broccoli and chips. The atmosphere was great and family friendly. If you're looking for a good place to eat in Tain (there aren't many options), this is a great choice.

Anyone in the area or visiting Dornoch must have a meal here. This place is great! One of the best meals I've had in Scotland and I've spent the last four years living in Edinburgh and St Andrews. Great food and drinks. Super friendly owner, Graham, and staff. Everyone should definitely check out this very unique place & take home a piece of their great carrot cake too! 5 stars! Can't wait to come back.

We stop in Tain on our way back from Dunrobin Castle. We had a very late lunch. It was a great decision, everything from the service to the meal was excellent. Salmon with the pastry was delicious. My sister had the roast beef and said it was scrumptious. We are here from the US and very impressed with this restaurant.

This brightly appointed restaurant is located the former train station so visitors from Inverness and other points along the ScotRail route could easily train in for a wonderful dinner in Tain. Platform 1864 offers a full bar with a fair selection of draft beers. I chose the venison and enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a go!
